SELECTION GUIDE · 800G FORM FACTOR

800G OSFP vs QSFP-DD: Choose the Host Port First

OSFP and QSFP-DD can both appear in 800G-class systems, but they are different module and cage ecosystems. The correct starting point is the exact host platform and port—not the word “800G”.

Host CageOSFP or QSFP-DD must match the platform
Electrical Lanes800G-class implementations use eight high-speed lanes
Optical ArchitectureDR8, 2×FR4 or another platform-supported path
ValidationFirmware, FEC, connector and breakout context

Do not choose the form factor from bandwidth alone

At 800G, both OSFP and QSFP-DD800 specifications use eight high-speed electrical lanes. That similarity does not make the mechanical interfaces interchangeable.

OSFP

  • Eight high-speed electrical lanes.
  • 800GAUI-8 supports 8 × 100 Gb/s electrical lanes.
  • The OSFP MSA defines the module, cage, electrical interface and pinout.
  • Use only when the target host has the corresponding OSFP port implementation.

QSFP-DD800

  • Eight-lane double-density QSFP architecture.
  • QSFP-DD800 supports 800 Gb/s over 8 × 100 Gb/s electrical lanes.
  • The QSFP-DD MSA defines its own module, cage, connector and thermal requirements.
  • Use only when the target host has the corresponding QSFP-DD / QSFP-DD800 port implementation.
Practical rule: an OSFP module should not be selected for a QSFP-DD host cage, or vice versa. Confirm the exact equipment port before selecting the optical PN.

Six checks before deciding OSFP or QSFP-DD

01 / PLATFORMIdentify the exact deviceSwitch, NIC / HCA / DPU, server or appliance model.
02 / CAGEConfirm the physical host portRead the platform documentation or inspect the exact port specification.
03 / PORT MODEConfirm native or breakoutNative 800G and breakout operation may use different link planning.
04 / OPTICSConfirm optical architectureDR8, 2×FR4 or another supported optical path.
05 / MEDIAConfirm fiber, connector and reachParallel or duplex fiber architecture must match the selected optic.
06 / VALIDATIONConfirm firmware and FEC contextUse the target platform documentation and project validation evidence.

Form factor is only one layer of compatibility

NOT ENOUGH

Same 800G rate

The same headline rate does not establish mechanical, optical or firmware compatibility.

NOT ENOUGH

Same reach

Reach alone does not identify the required connector, lane mapping or optical architecture.

NOT ENOUGH

Same connector family

Connector similarity does not prove host support or end-to-end interoperability.

REQUIRED

Exact platform evidence

Final selection should be tied to the real host port, configuration and validation requirement.

Eight electrical lanes do not make the module ecosystems interchangeable

At 800G, both ecosystems can carry eight 100G-class electrical lanes, but the host mechanics, thermal strategy and backward-compatibility rules are defined by different MSAs.

Four artifacts to attach before the form-factor decision is frozen

01 / PLATFORMHost hardware evidenceSwitch / NIC / DPU model, port map and cage specification.
02 / MODEPort operating modeNative 800G or documented breakout mapping and lane mode.
03 / THERMALCooling / module-shell requirementConfirm the host-required module variant and thermal envelope.

Use the MSA specifications as the form-factor authority

QIANWU uses platform documentation and current MSA specifications as technical evidence. Project compatibility still requires the exact target platform and configuration.

OSFP MSA

The current OSFP module specification defines 8-lane operation, including 800GAUI-8 at 8 × 100 Gb/s.
